If you’ve ever watched, “The Closer,” on TNT airing Monday nights, you know the special bond Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson has with her pet feline, Kitty.

At first glance, theirs an unlikely bond. At the beginning of the series, Brenda rolls into Los Angeles from Atlanta to start her new gig, finds a house to rent - and also finds Kitty keeping house there. Instead of shooing her out, Brenda and Kitty learn to live together amiably, and become buddies, really. Kitty even warms up nicely to Brenda’s boyfriend-now-husband, Frtiz.

In the episode entitled, “Red Tape,” Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) and her husband Fritz (Jon Tenney) finally have to say goodbye to Kitty, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness on the show … and in real life.

On the show, the couple decides to have Kitty’s vet end her suffering. In real life, the actor cat had an untreatable kidney ailment and passed away shortly after the episode taping.

It’s a decision that every pet lover puts off and doesn’t want to deal with: when to humanely terminate a pet’s life. Yet sometimes the decision must be made.

Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson makes it with love and compassion.
